The 1st generation Broadcast Positioning System (BPS) prototype was built and tested in early 2023. NAB and its partners studied the prototype system and identified gaps that will take the prototype’s maturity level from lab testing to deployment grade. The 2nd generation prototype, which is expected to be market deployable, is currently being built, and it will be completed by December 2023. On November 17, an early version of the 2nd generation prototype will be demonstrated at a BPS event organized by Humber College in Canada, an event that will be attended by more than 70 high-profile PNT stakeholders from the US and Canada.

Meanwhile, NAB has responded to Department of Transportation’s complementary PNT (CPNT) RFI. NAB is building a consortium of equipment vendors and broadcasters in anticipation of a joint market trial proposal. By the 2024 NAB Show, we expect that NAB and its partners will be able to test the BPS time delivery performance of a live ATSC 3.0 station. We also expect to know more about the scope and duration of the market trial by April 2024.

NAB plans to set up a time delivery validation system at its 1M Lab. This system will measure and display the time delivery performance of the 1M Lab transmitter and of a live ATSC 3.0 station in the Washington DC area. This session will identify the technical challenges of calibrating an ATSC 3.0 transmission system and share the solutions to those challenges.

The first goal of this session is to update the attendees on the progress of BPS tests and market trials. The second goal of this session is to share the lessons learned from the BPS market trail phase.
