The FCC is considering a rule change that will make it easier for FM HD Radio broadcasters to operate with asymmetric digital sidebands. Doing so gives some broadcasters the opportunity to increase digital power on one sideband only, providing for improved coverage while balancing interference concerns to adjacent stations.

This presentation includes background information on asymmetric operation, and the application of it on broadcast stations. A shift to asymmetrical powers will require broadcast engineers to learn how to describe and employ the digital power levels on a station.
