New World Symphony is a higher education music facility on Miami Beach. They've always included advanced technology as a way to lure a younger demographic to this style of music. The facility includes immersive video projection systems in the hall, external "Wallcasts" with outdoor immersive audio, distant learning systems, and much more. As chief video engineer, I was challenged to take the production from HD to UHD when UHD was in its infancy, and most wiring required "quad link". Adding to the challenge is latency in music production that are projected MUST be visually perfectly in time. As a showplace for not just New World Symphony concerts, but the likes of Pitbull, Gloria Estefan, Bono, Katy Perry, and many many special presentation and celebrities (from "The Rock" to John Williams), the quality HAD to be above and "beyond broadcast". The process to design and build to just over 3 years.. which included waiting for manufacturers to catch up to 12G. 4KIP simply wouldn't work as it was still an infant, and the minimal latency the 4KIP over even 12G meant it wouldn't work. The design and build required a lot of learning.. and there weren't a lot of resources or "lessons learned" from others, but ultimately the entire process was a huge success. Today New World Center hosts a dozen broadcast cameras, manned & robotic cameras, 20 PTZ UHD cameras, 144x144 12G router, 64x48 3ME 12G switcher, two UHD CG's, 10 UHD recorders, 8 UHD server rec/players, sub switcher, 4K laser projection systems, and much more. It's been used for CBS and PBS TV specials, and the technology exceeded their requirements (and of course required down-conversion to HD in post production). There were many lessons leared.. and I'm glad to share the good, the bad, and the ugly.
