When radio’s network model was disrupted in the 1950s and 1960s by the television tsunami, radio broadcasters successfully pivoted to format radio that super-served local markets.  Fast-forward to today’s content-rich world of digital media, and the competition is now mega players that include Spotify, SiriusXM, and YouTube, all of whom aim their content at millions of users with no geographical borders.  How can radio operators gain a competitive edge in this rapidly changing environment?  Researcher/consultant Fred Jacobs takes the stage at NAB do discuss the viability of radio embracing its local markets roots.  Could owning the hometown turf become radio’s “secret sauce” once again?  In fact, could it help broadcast radio restore its relevance?
