Giardina, Carolyn

Senior Entertainment Technology & Crafts Editor at Variety VIP+

Award-winning journalist Carolyn Giardina is senior entertainment technology and crafts editor at Variety Intelligence Platform (VIP+), a division of Variety that operates a digital content offering analyzing the media and technology industries; and entertainment news leader Variety.

She took on that role in February, following more than a decade at The Hollywood Reporter, where she served as tech editor and was an active member of the awards team, dedicated to coverage of the crafts categories. At The Hollywood Reporter, she helped to launch Behind the Screen in 2013, writing what started as a blog focused on technology and the crafts, and later expanded to include a magazine column, which she wrote, and podcast, which she hosted. Each year, she also moderated THR’s animation and cinematographer roundtables.

Earlier, she worked in the U.S. and aboard, as an editor, reporter or columnist, on titles including Cinema Editor, SHOOT and SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal. She co-authored Exploring 3D: The New Grammar of Stereoscopic Filmmaking (Focal Press, 2013).

For her industry contributions, Carolyn has been honored with American Cinema Editors’ Robert Wise Award for journalistic illumination of the art of film editing, the International Cinematographers Guild’s Technicolor William A. Fraker Award for journalistic contributions to cinematography, and the Advanced Imaging Society’s Distinguished Leadership Lumiere Award.

She’s an active member of the community—a frequent conference speaker/moderator who has served on numerous industry boards, committees and award juries. That includes multiple terms on the HPA Board of Directors, during which time she co-founded and was founding chair of the HPA Awards. Carolyn also shares her experience as a lecturer at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film & Media Arts.
