Camera Operator at SOC

David J. Frederick, SOC, Local 600 Cinematographer, VFX Producer - a 1979 NYU Tisch film school graduate, began his professional career in New York as a 1st Camera Assistant, working on films ranging from the Coen Brothers’ Blood Simple to Bruce Beresford’s Driving Miss Daisy.

As a filmmaker, some favorite films and TV series he has DP’d or been lead camera operator on include: FBI: International, Survivor, Aquarius, Sons of Anarchy, Mayans, The Soloist, The Society, The Bridge, Muppets From Space, Mad Love, Northern Exposure, Felicity, Sliders, Women’s Murder Club, WestWorld - the Utah unit, and the tv series, Get Shorty.

Awards include: SOC Camera Operator of the Year for his work on Sons of Anarchy, S3 as well as an Emmy Nomination for his work on Survivor, S41 & 42.

Frederick shoots with every camera and format of film and digital, saying, “There is always a story to be told with a camera. Sometimes it’s a lavish epic captured with remote heads, Titan Cranes, helicopters, Steadicam, U/W, Gyro stabilized rigs or large format anamorphic cameras and lenses or it is a tv series, short film or documentary with an extreme telephoto lens or a handheld camera making shots with the latest professional digital camera.”

Frederick spent over 20 years as an active Board member of the Society of Camera Operators, proudly serving as President and Awards Gala Event and Special Projects Film Producer for many years. Frederick is an active member of the ICG Local 600, Steadicam Operators Association and the Television Academy.

Adding to his experience as a Director of Photography on numerous VFX unit shoots he has broadened his scope as a VFX Producer specializing on beauty fixes on film and television productions.
